Description: Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners understood that nutrition was vital to the patient's health, but modern practitioners often encounter conflicting information they don't know how to apply. Current nutritional recommendations actually contribute to subclinical malnourishment, making your treatments less effective than they could be. Traditional diets were different than how we eat now, as evidenced by our rate of degenerative disease. With the intention of treating the root, and not the branch and symptoms, this course will discuss:

• the differences between traditional diets vs. current foods
• the fallacy of low-fat diets and the damage they cause
• being effective in reversing diabetes and insulin resistance
• what current subclinical malnourishment looks like, and where it comes from
• misunderstandings practitioners have about traditional Chinese diets
• what's accurate and inaccurate about topics ranging from soy to raw diets to the book The China Study

You will leave with a clear understanding about what's accurate and inaccurate in current food recommendations, diets, and fads, and the ability to better asses your patients' nutrition, and where it may be hampering their health and your treatments. You will learn skills you can immediately apply to improve patients' health and resources to further depend your knowledge. As a healthcare provider, patients rely on you for your knowledge, and being able to speak to them about nutritional topics is vital.

Marlene Merritt has a regular nutrition column in the journal Acupuncture Today, and is currently writing a book on how Americans have lost their common sense about food. She has been a lecturer for 20 years, speaking on topics ranging from anatomy and physiology, to nutrition, to communication and business. 

Will Mitchell, with a separate specialty in Japanese acupuncture, brings his degree in Microbiology to the technicality of nutrition, and teaches at AOMA Graduate School of Integrative Medicine. Bringing 10+ years of clinical experience, they are both enrolled in studies for a second Masters degree in Nutrition. In addition to their full-time clinical practice, they lecture to healthcare practitioners across the United States and in Canada, on issues ranging from diabetes, endocrine dysfunction, blood chemistry, nutrition, and celiac disease/gluten intolerance.
