PREVENTING COLDS & FLU WITH CHINESE MEDICINE

Chinese medicine postulates that remaining healthy, especially in the winter season, involves two basic principles: (1) safeguarding the exterior and (2) strengthening the interior.  These are not complex concepts.Simply stated, staying well requires that we both protect ourselves from exposure to flu “bugs” and cold “germs,” and that we maintain a strong and healthy immune system so that, should we become exposed to a cold or a flu, we are able to fight it off quickly and efficiently.

So what does this mean on a practical level?

We can “safeguard the exterior” by making sure that we limit the ways in which we are open to the entry of infections, viruses, and germs.Hand washing remains the number one preventative measure we can take, but make sure to moisturize your hands after washing to avoid chapped skin, hang nails, and open sores around the cuticles. These are easy ports of entry for infection. The ancient Chinese believed that “external pathogens” entered the body through specific acupuncture points located on the back of the neck.  Limit your exposure of these very important points by wearing a turtleneck or scarf around your neck when you are out in the cold or damp, and when you are around people who are physically ill.

“Strengthening the interior” involves basic self-care measures such as balancing rest and exercise, working and playing in moderation, and eating a healthy diet.  Vitamins and other supplements can provide an extra boost to the immune system, which many people need in the winter months.  Getting massage, chiropractic treatment, and acupuncture are other ways in which to keep your immune system functioning at an optimum level.

Your acupuncturist may help you safeguard the exterior and strengthen the interior through the use of  acupuncture needle treatments, Chinese Herbs, or a combination of the two. While acupuncture treatment is an excellent way to prevent illness year-round, there are some specific protocols designed to expel pathogens, or germs, and help the body return to wellness quickly should you get sick.A variety of herbal formulas are available to help boost your immune system and to help you recover quickly should you become ill.  These formulas are based on the particular characteristics of your illness, and must be prescribed by an acupuncturist.
